Details

A beautiful and unusual vintage German ceramic wall plaque, marked “LAACH” on the reverse and believed to originate from the artistic tradition associated with Maria Laach / Ars Liturgica.

The hand-painted design depicts a striking winged angel protecting or guiding a child, with a serpent below. The elongated, gently tapered shape and expressive decoration give the piece a distinctive mid-century interpretation of traditional Christian imagery.

The plaque is made from reddish earthenware and has a richly glazed and hand-decorated surface. Fine craquelure/crazing is visible throughout the glaze, contributing considerably to its vintage character.

A painted artist’s monogram appears at the lower left of the image, while the reverse carries an impressed mark including the clearly readable word “LAACH.”
