Details

Sourced from an old Portuguese family residence, this impressive hallmarked solid silver ewer and oval basin (Portuguese: gomil e lavanda) is believed to date from the early 19th century, probably circa 1810–1820.

Current research into the surviving hallmarks and traditional assay/test marks suggests Portuguese manufacture, possibly Porto. Corresponding marks appear on both the ewer and basin, supporting their identification as an original matched set. The precise assay office and silversmith are currently being researched and have not yet been definitively identified.

The ewer has an elegant Neoclassical form, with a tall classical silhouette, high looping handle, elongated gently flared pouring lip, beautifully proportioned body and pedestal foot. It is accompanied by a substantial broad oval basin with a restrained moulded border, creating a particularly impressive and harmonious pair.

Sets of this type were traditionally known in Portugal as gomil e lavanda and were used as lavabo or washing services in affluent and formal households, as well as for ceremonial purposes.

With a substantial combined weight of approximately 1,938 grams, this is an impressive example of early Portuguese silver rather than simply a decorative table piece. Its restrained Neoclassical design makes it equally attractive as a serious addition to a collection of European silver or as a statement piece displayed on a console, dining table or sideboard.

Both pieces show appropriate age-related wear, surface marks and patination consistent with their considerable age. The surviving hallmarks are worn but visible specialist research in Portugal attributes the work. to Antonio Pereira Soares active between 1797 and 1825.

Please note: The attribution to Porto and dating to circa 1810–1820 are based on current research and comparison with documented Portuguese silver examples and should therefore be regarded as provisional pending specialist confirmation.
